Your Complete Guide to the Sims FreePlay

The Sims FreePlay is a fun and addictive app. It is only 1 year old but has a large fan base. EA is constantly updating and creating new challenges to the game. This guide will cover the game basics as well as information and tips regarding the new updates (most recently the summer update).

The difference between Sims freeplay and The sims 3 - What's the catch?

The Sims Freeplay, you guessed it, is free. But there is one big difefrence: Freeplay is on REAL TIME.

This changes the way the game works. The more time an action takes to complete, the more lucrative it is. The game is not meant to be played hours at a time, but rather every once in a while you can check up on your sims and give them different actions. It may be hard to get used to at first, but it is actually quite addictive!

But wait...how does EA make money off the sims freeplay?

The game may be free but there is an oline store. You can enter it by pressing the purple icon on the left corner with the shopping cart. EA sells simoleons, Lp and specials for REAL money.

Plus the game is very popular. It has many players and EA is constantly coming up with new updates to keep players "hooked".

Warning

This game is addictive!

Creating Sims

Create an adult sim by creating a new house and clicking on the plus icon. You can choose your sim's name, personality, clothes, makeup and hair. Throughout the game you can change the sim's look but skin color, name and personality are non changeable.

Create a baby sim by purchasing a crib from the home store and clicking on the plus icon. Only married couples that live together can have babies. Creating baby sims costs LP. When the baby is ready click the icon adn choose the baby's skin color, name and clothing. skin color and name cannot be changed later.

In order to make a baby sim into a toddler an adult sim will have to bake a birthday cake (5 LP and 24 hours).

In order to make a toddler into a preteen make another birthday cake.

There is currently no Teen sim.

Taking Care of Your Sims Needs - The fastest ways

Sims have 6 different "needs":

-food: Fastest way to fill is to purchase a 3 star fridge, then eating takes 30 seconds.

-toilet: Fastest way to fill is to get a 3 star toilet, action will take 5 seconds.

-sleep: Fastest way is to purchase a 3 star bed/coffee machine. Both will take 3 minutes.

-bath/shower: Fastest way to fill is to purchase a 3 star shower. Shower will take 30 seconds.

-social: Praise dog, 30 seconds.

-fun: Grow Free bell peppers, 30 seconds.

*If you completed the santa challenge the vanity desk (10 seconds) is the fastest for bath/shower.

You can also use "cupcakes" to automatically fill up sims needs. However these are pricey and cost 5 LP.

A recent fishing competition (that just ended) gave you the chance to win a "singing salmon" for 8 LP that instantly inspired your sims. You had to catch 6 different fish in order to get the reward.

Leveling Up - What Happens

When you complete an action you receive XP. When the blue progress bar on the top middle of your screen reaches 100% you level up.

When you level up:

1. You get 1 free LP

2. You unlock items (plants, furniture, dishes..)

3. You unlock the ability to create more sims (out of 16)

4. Things get EXPENSIVE, meaning houses and businesses will cost and take more time to build.

Although things get more expensive, players will (at their new level) have more oppertunities to make money. They have a higher daily mailbox reward, more plants to grow and more sims to send to work.

As you level up, the progress bar will take longer and longer to reach 100%. For example, at level 1 a few simple and quick actions will level you up. But in level 23 the same actions will hardly even move your progress bar by 1%. You need to do higher XP actions to level up. Higher XP actions include: Sending sims to work/school, long gardening/baking and having your sims deep sleep.

Career and Jobs

Money and XP

The Jobs available are:

-Teacher

-Athlete

-Politician

-Firefighter

-Scientist

-Artist

-Musician

The highest paying job is SCIENTIST.

Jobs have 5 levels of adavancement. Each level gives you more XP and money.Scientist hours are 10:00 a.m to 6:00 p.m.

Preteen Money making

Pre teens can go to school (you choose between morning, afternoon or night class). Their grades rise as they study (buy a desk from the home store) and go to school. Highest grade is A+++, this grade will give you most income and XP.

Toddlers and Babies cannot earn money. In fact an adult must be with them at all times (in the house).

Hobbies - Very profitable

You can find the hobby icon in the side menue--the chess and soccer ball sign. You can view the rewards for each hobby by pressing the card signs under the hobby menue.

Grown up sims can choose between 3 different hobbies:

-Ghost Hunting--Click on "spooky" (red ghost icon) furniture ans select search for ghosts. This will take 6 minutes. Then click on the ghost until it is "caught".

-Fashion Designing--Buy fashion studio from hobby shop (costs 2,500 coins). Place it in your home and press it. Now select the time that you want your sim to design for: one hour, 9 hours or a day. When action is complete click on the yellow light bulb three times.

-Fishing--Build the park and click on the water by the dock with the fishing gear. Select the time frame: 3 minutes, 1 hour, 9 hours, 1 day. When action is complete click exclamation mark.

The newest update (for summer) includes a brand new hobby: -diving: Build the swimming center in town to get started with the hobby.

Each hobby has 6 "levels" of advancement. Each new level unlocks items you can catch. Catching all items will give you a reward.

Important: Sims can only participate in one hobby at a time.

You can get teen sims to have a hobby by buying the sports center. Teens can choose between either ballet or karate. You can advance their levels by training at the sport center.

Cool bonus: Teen sims unlock unique hobby themed furniture as they level up.

Buying Houses - Lots of options here!

The game has several pre-made houses available. These can be bought by simeloleons or LP (life points).

The houses available for money are:

1. Unfurnished studio

2. Furnished Townhouse

3. Family Home

4. Japenese Retreat

5. Mansion (comes with a luxury car that costs 80 LP!)

6. Empty Lot

The Houses available for LP's are:

1. The Sanctuary (two rooms and lots of plants)

2. Dark Secret

3. Geek Heaven

4. Pro Skater's Dream Pad (comes with a skating ramp)

5. Medieval Castle

6. Sim Cinema

7. Designer Home

8.Sci-Fi Shuttle (LP furniture)

As you level up in the game the price and time the houses take to build will rise. However the pices of the LP houses do not change.

During the halloween challenge you could win a "haunted house" (not available anymore). Another house that is not available anymore is the vampire house.

*By the way, Creating and designing your own houses is also fun.

Businesses - Raise your town value, add daily revenue and more

The businesses you can buy are:

-The pet shop

Allows you to buy pets for your sims (cats, dogs and bunnies). Press the shop to view the different cats and dogs available (they cost LP's). Pet store items can also be viewed through the furniture icon. Here you can buy pet toys, food and bunnies. Pets dig up LP and money.

-The childrens store

Choose unique furniture for your sim infants, toddlers and preteens. You cannot have baby sims without buying the store first (you need to purchase a crib).

-The car shop

Treat your sims to a sweet ride. The better the car the more expensive it will be. You can "go for a drive" and collect money and LP.

-The supermarket

Get discounted goods for your sims.

-The park

The recent update has introduced fishing. Fishing can be done at the park. You can also feed the ducks, play with RC boat, BBQ, and play chess.

-The hobby shop

Get ahead in your career by purchasing the hobby shop. Every career (besides teacher) has a hoby item that you can purchase that will improve your sims career level. The recent update introduced fashion designing, the fashion studio can be bought at the hobby shop.

-The competition center

Daily competitions in the different hobbies and careers. Your sims can place 1st to 4th place and receive awards (LP, momey and XP).

-The costume shop

Get cool costumes for your sims. Different costumes are available to adults, preteens, todlers, babies, boys and girls.

-The club

Unlock this one by having enough neighbors on facebook or by LP. The club has a dj booth, bar and dance floor.

The Salon - Change up your sims looks

Completing Goals

Completing goals moves the game a long and is a great way to get LP.

Most goals will reward you with 1 LP. However certain goals will reward you with XP or even 2 LP!

There are several types of goals:

1. Complete an action on a certain day/time. This goal will sometimes give you 2 LP for completion.

2. Buy furniture. For example a three star stereo/bed/couch ,a dog bone, plants or preteen desk.

3. Build a business/ work place (and employ a sim there).

4. Relationship goals . These include getting married, making two sims enemies or having a baby.

5. Collecting goals. Collect income from map, collect mailbox reward, collect driving revenue.

6. Simple sim actions. For example send a sim to work/ have a sim start a certain hobby. Some actions may need to be done ONLY by a baby/toddler/preteen/adult. Such as have a toddler play with blocks.

As you see (and have probably noticed) there are endless different kinds of goals. Although the goals may at first seem annoying (why does the game decide what I need to do? Why should I listen?) It is worth completing. The goals not only give you "easy" Lp but move the game along and enable you to do more in your town.

Some goals (many in the early levels) are simple and don't take much time to complete. Other goals (many in advance levels) will take longer.

Sometimes a goal can be completed if you have ALREADY done it in the past. For example, if you already built the business. But other times (usually when the goal is to buy something) it will not count.

Ex. Even though I already bought a three star fridge I will have to buy it again to achieve the goal.

Ways to make money and LP

  1. Get sims to work as a scientist (the most lucrative job). At the top of their career level they will earn 1000 simoleons a day (plus XP).
  2. Give adult sims a hobby: Fishing, Ghost hunting. Fashion designing.

Finding items will give you money, LP and XP. When you find all items you unlock special rewards.

  3. Raise town value by building businesses and houses. Then each day collect daily XP and money.

Bonus: As you build more, town value rises and receive a larger sum of money as your daily mail box reward.

  4. Gardening: Recommended!

Gardening is a great way to make money. The more time a plant takes to grow, the more money it will give.

Update: A new fashion designing competition gives you the chance to win special gardening clothes that will give you more money when gardening.

  5. Cooking

You can cook by pressing on stove and choosing between different dishes. The more time a dish takes the more lucrative.

  6. Collecting the money and LP your dogs and cats dig up (Usually not large sums).
  7. Collect daily LP and money from the party boat.
  8. Complete game goals for LP, XP and money.
  9. Click the small purple shopping cart icon on the left corner . This will connect you to the store. Then click on the blue "free" icon on the left top corner and see if there are any trailers to watch for a free LP.

Game Glitches

EA is usually very good at fixing glitches and updating the game. There are no "cheats" (like in the sims 3) in freeplay. For example, when people try to "cheat" the real time in the game (by changing the time on their iphone so that sims finish tasks earlier) the daily mail reward stops coming and some sims will not go to work.

However there are still some glitches in the game. Sometimes after a shower, sims will not change back into their clothes but stay in their underwear. Also, at times for no apparent reason sims hands or face will turn black (?)
